Ayushman Bharat in West Bengal: How Beneficiaries Will Be Selected

West Bengal has now begun implementing Ayushman Bharat–Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY). For residents trying to understand who will qualify, the key issue is how the beneficiary database is identified and verified.

How are Ayushman Bharat beneficiaries being identified in West Bengal?

The state Health and Family Welfare Department has directed officials to use beneficiary data under the National Food Security Act (NFSA) as the source database for onboarding. The categories specifically identified for verification are Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY), Special Priority Household (SPHH) and Priority Household (PHH) ration-card beneficiaries.

What happens after the initial list is prepared?

The names identified from the NFSA database are subject to field-level verification. Officials and field-level workers are required to verify households and validate the eligibility information before the beneficiary is included. Where e-KYC is pending, it is completed during the verification process.

How many families are expected to benefit?

The Union Health Ministry said West Bengal’s implementation of AB-PMJAY is expected to extend health assurance to about 1.43 crore families, including eligible families as well as groups such as senior citizens and frontline workers. The scheme provides health cover of up to ₹5 lakh per family per year for eligible secondary and tertiary hospitalisation.

What should residents do?

Residents whose details appear in the relevant government databases should cooperate with the verification and e-KYC process and ensure that their identity and household information are accurate. Eligibility should ultimately be confirmed through the official beneficiary-verification process rather than through unofficial lists or social-media claims.

Why this matters

West Bengal became the 36th State/Union Territory to implement AB-PMJAY in June 2026. The rollout has created strong public interest because the state had previously not implemented the central scheme. The beneficiary-selection and verification process is therefore central to determining who receives coverage.
