Camac Street Case: TMC MP Derek O’Brien Appears at Shakespeare Sarani Police Station

TMC Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’Brien appeared at Shakespeare Sarani Police Station in Kolkata on Wednesday in connection with the unrest at party leader Abhishek Banerjee’s Camac Street office. Police had issued him a second notice after he did not appear in response to the first notice.

Why was Derek O’Brien summoned?

The case relates to an incident last Thursday when Kolkata Municipal Corporation officials went to Abhishek Banerjee’s Camac Street office to remove a Trinamool Congress-branded billboard that the civic body alleged had been installed illegally and was hanging dangerously. Police and civic officials faced resistance while entering the office, and allegations of assault and obstruction were subsequently made.

Three FIRs have been registered at Shakespeare Sarani Police Station. The cases include allegations of obstructing government officials in the discharge of their duties, assault, and alleged harassment of women police personnel. Abhishek Banerjee, Derek O’Brien and other TMC leaders have been named in the FIRs.

Abhishek appeared a day earlier

Abhishek Banerjee appeared at the same police station on Tuesday, entering around 12:17 pm and leaving after 5 pm. O’Brien was summoned for Wednesday after his lawyers had earlier communicated that he could not attend on the original date.

More TMC leaders called

Abhishek’s aide Sumit Ray has also been summoned for questioning in the case. TMC leader Baishwanar Chattopadhyay has been asked to appear on Thursday, while former MLA Humayun Kabir has also received a police notice.

The investigation is continuing, with the police examining the events surrounding the dispute over the billboard at the Camac Street office.
