Kolkata Pairs With Darjeeling, Santiniketan, Bishnupur and Digha as Bengal Bets on Culture-Led Tourism

Kolkata: West Bengal is placing its living culture — festivals, crafts, cuisine, music and architecture — at the centre of a new tourism growth strategy, pairing Kolkata with Darjeeling, Santiniketan, Bishnupur, Purulia and Digha rather than concentrating development in the state's busiest destinations.

The approach aims to connect Kolkata's urban heritage with smaller cultural centres, artisan communities and pilgrimage locations, with heritage walks, craft workshops, rural stays and regional food experiences envisioned as key components of the wider network.

The strategy comes as the state manages strong visitor demand alongside congestion in Darjeeling and Kalimpong, with authorities indicating future development will weigh destination carrying capacity and infrastructure availability. Industry stakeholders note growing demand across Darjeeling, Digha, Kolkata, Santiniketan and Mayapur, driven by experiential travel, heritage tourism and eco-tourism.

Officials have argued Kolkata itself deserves promotion beyond its role as an entry point to eastern India, citing the city's nearly 350 years of history, colonial architecture and riverfront as grounds for heritage walks and cultural performances in their own right.
