Kolkata Police and Drug Control Raid Bara Bazar Medicine Market Over Fake and Expired Drugs

Kolkata's Bara Bazar medicine market came under a joint inspection by the State Drug Control authorities and the Kolkata Police Enforcement Branch on Wednesday, September 9, ahead of the Durga Puja season.

Officials raided several shops at Mehta Building and examined medicines and their records in detail. The inspection focused on whether counterfeit or prohibited drugs were being sold and whether expired medicines had entered the market.

Batch Numbers and Records Checked

The officials checked medicine batch numbers and scrutinised documents associated with the stock. Mehta Building is known as a major wholesale medicine market from where comparatively cheaper medicines are supplied to shops across West Bengal.

The raid comes amid wider enforcement drives in Kolkata and across the state, with authorities stepping up inspections before Durga Puja. The operation was aimed at identifying irregularities in medicine sales and checking the authenticity and validity of drugs in circulation.
