Heavy Rain Alert in South Bengal: Kolkata and 3 Districts Face Intense Showers

Kolkata saw repeated spells of rain on Wednesday, September 2, with waterlogging reported on several roads. The weather office has warned of moderate to heavy rain in the city over the next few hours.

Heavy-rain orange alerts have been issued for Hooghly, South 24 Parganas and Howrah, while East Burdwan is under a warning for light to moderate rain with lightning.

South Bengal forecast

Rain is expected across all South Bengal districts on Thursday as well. A yellow alert is in place, with the possibility of very heavy rain in Hooghly, East Burdwan, West Burdwan and Birbhum. Kolkata, Howrah, North and South 24 Parganas, Nadia and Murshidabad are also expected to receive heavy rain.

The weather system is linked to a deep depression extending across Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining coastal Odisha, Jharkhand and north-central Madhya Pradesh. The system is expected to weaken into a depression over the next 12 hours and then move towards southern Uttar Pradesh and north-central Madhya Pradesh.

Friday may bring some improvement, although scattered rain is expected to continue in parts of South Bengal. North Bengal is also likely to see heavy rain over the coming days, with very heavy rain forecast in Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar on Thursday.

Residents are advised to follow the latest IMD updates and take care while travelling through waterlogged roads.
