Congress Leader Atanu Das Arrested in Kolkata Over Alleged Burning of Bageshwar Baba's Image

Kolkata Police arrested Congress leader Atanu Das in connection with an alleged incident involving the burning of a picture of Dhirendra Krishna Shastri, popularly known as Bageshwar Baba, during a protest outside Bhawanipore Police Station.

According to the report, Das, the general secretary of the South Kolkata District Congress, was taken into custody from his residence in Tollygunge in the early hours of Friday. Police are expected to produce him before a court.

What happened at the protest?

Congress workers had staged a demonstration against Shastri's remarks on eating fish and meat during Durga Puja. The protest took place outside Bhawanipore Police Station, where the image of the religious figure was allegedly burnt and subjected to other acts of disrespect.

The arrest came after West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari called for action against those allegedly involved in burning the photograph. The incident has since triggered a political confrontation, with Congress leaders questioning the arrest and defending the right to protest.

Police are also looking for other people allegedly involved in the incident. The allegations remain subject to the ongoing investigation and court proceedings.
