India Protests After Indian, Pakistani Naval Ships Collide in International Waters

India on Wednesday summoned Pakistan's Charge d'Affaires in New Delhi and lodged a strong protest after Pakistani naval units collided with an Indian Navy vessel in international waters, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

The MEA described the conduct of the Pakistani naval units as unacceptable and unprofessional. It said the incident did not cause any major damage.

India cites 1991 bilateral agreement

India said the conduct of the Pakistani naval ship was in direct contravention of Article 10 of the April 1991 Agreement on Advance Notice on Military Exercises, Manoeuvres and Troops Movements. The MEA asked Pakistan to ensure that military units exercise due care and comply with relevant bilateral agreements to prevent a recurrence.

India also instructed its Charge d'Affaires in Islamabad to lodge a similar protest with Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Pakistan had not immediately issued a public response in the reports available at publication time.

The incident took place in the northern Arabian Sea amid continuing military and diplomatic tensions between the two countries.
