New Zealand Parliament Clears Free Trade Agreement with India

New Zealand's Parliament has passed legislation to implement the free trade agreement with India, marking a major step toward ratification of the bilateral pact signed in April 2026.

The legislation passed 93-29, with support from the opposition Labour Party. Under the agreement, tariffs on about 95% of New Zealand's exports to India are expected to be eliminated or significantly reduced once the pact is fully implemented.

New Zealand's government said 57% of its exports to India will become duty-free from the day the agreement takes effect. The pact will enter into force after both countries complete their respective ratification procedures.

India and New Zealand signed the free trade agreement in New Delhi on April 27, 2026. New Zealand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade says two-way trade between the countries is worth about NZ$3.95 billion annually.
