India Sends Around 500 Tonnes of Hilsa to Bangladesh as Demand Rises

Around 500 metric tonnes of hilsa have reportedly been sent from India to Bangladesh over the past two months, according to fish traders quoted in recent reports. The unusual trade flow comes as Bangladesh faces a shortage of hilsa and demand remains strong.

Gujarat Emerges as a Key Source

Fish traders say hilsa from Gujarat has been moving into Bangladesh, particularly because of demand for roe-bearing fish. The fish has reportedly been transported through commercial channels serving the Bangladesh market.

Durga Puja Demand in India

At the same time, Indian fish importers are seeking permission for hilsa imports from Bangladesh ahead of Durga Puja. The availability and price of hilsa remain a major concern for traders and consumers in West Bengal.

The trade situation is developing, with future shipments depending on supply, domestic demand and the permissions granted by the authorities on both sides.
