Kolkata Police Act After Allegations of Irregularities in CAB Election Nomination Process

Kolkata Police have stepped up checks ahead of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) election after allegations of irregularities in the dispatch of election documents to several clubs.

According to the report, complaints were lodged over the way nomination and election papers were delivered to some clubs. Police have contacted clubs to verify whether the documents reached them correctly and have asked for photographs of the forms and courier-stamped envelopes as part of the verification process.

What the complaint alleges

A complaint by a member of Calcutta University Institute alleged that election documents meant for several clubs were not sent to their registered addresses and raised questions over courier records. The allegations involve five clubs, including Calcutta University Institute, YMCA and Friends Sporting.

The complaint also raised questions about tracking records and booking receipts. The allegations are being examined and have not been established as fact.

Police verification

Police have reportedly contacted clubs to confirm receipt of nomination papers and requested photographs of the forms and courier envelopes, including the courier stamps. The move is aimed at checking whether there was any manipulation in the delivery process.

The CAB annual general meeting is scheduled for September 24, when elections are expected for the secretary, joint secretary and an Apex Council member. CAB officials have rejected the allegations and said documents were sent to the addresses recorded with the association.

The police inquiry and any further findings will determine whether the allegations are substantiated.
