Ravindra V Ghuge Sworn In as Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court

Justice Ravindra Vithalrao Ghuge was sworn in as the new Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court on Wednesday morning, giving the court a regular Chief Justice after a period under an acting arrangement.

The oath of office was administered by West Bengal Governor R N Ravi at Court Room 1 of the Calcutta High Court. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and Assembly Speaker Rathindra Bose were among those present at the ceremony.

Justice Ghuge had been serving as the Acting Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court. The Union government recently appointed him as Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court following the Supreme Court Collegium’s recommendation.

Justice Ghuge’s Legal Career

Justice Ghuge began practising law at the Bombay High Court in 1990 after completing his legal education in Maharashtra. During his career as an advocate, he represented workers and trade unions in a large number of matters and also appeared for corporate and multinational clients.

He was elevated as a judge of the Bombay High Court in June 2013 and became its Acting Chief Justice in June 2026 before moving to Calcutta.

His appointment gives the Calcutta High Court a permanent Chief Justice and marks a new phase in the court’s leadership.
