West Bengal Issues Closure Notices to 252 Unauthorized Madrasas, 100 More Show-Caused

The West Bengal government has issued closure notices to 252 unauthorized madrasas across the state following a survey by the Minority Affairs and Madrasah Education Department.

According to the report, the survey examined basic infrastructure, the number of teachers and students, adherence to the prescribed syllabus and compliance with administrative requirements. Around 100 more madrasas have also been served show-cause notices over similar concerns.

What the survey found

The findings indicate that a large number of institutions are operating without the required registration or recognition. Reports said the state has identified 2,396 madrasas functioning without the specified registration, alongside 2,132 recognized institutions.

Authorities have indicated that institutions receiving show-cause notices could also face action if their replies are not found satisfactory. The verification process is expected to continue.

The highest number of notices has reportedly been issued in districts including Malda, North Dinajpur, South 24 Parganas, Murshidabad and Nadia.

The state government says the action is aimed at ensuring that educational institutions comply with prescribed standards, infrastructure requirements and administrative rules.
